News: Two Remaining Issues On Rapid Transit System To Be Resolved Next Week

Jul 6, 2020

The Transport Ministry expects the two remaining issues relating to the Rapid Transit System (RTS) project connecting Johor Baru and Singapore to be resolved next week.

Malaysia and Singapore previously faced 222 issues relating to the project, of which 220 had been successfully resolved while the two other issues remained unresolved, reported Bernama.

“These issues are still pending approval from both countries and when I contacted the Transport Ministry this morning, they gave the assurance that both parties will be able to resolve (the remaining issues) because we are given until the end of July to conclude the whole process of negotiation,” Bernama quoted Senior Minister cum International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali as saying after an industry roundtable discussion.

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Ir Hasni Mohammad also attended the roundtable discussion.

When asked to elaborate on the unresolved issues, Mohamed Azmin declined to draw any conclusion saying the matter is under discussion.

In fact, a technical committee is set to convene on 13 July to resolve these issues, he said.

Mohamed Azmin explained that the RTS project is important to facilitate the people of Johor who need to travel to Singapore for work as well as help resolve the congestion problem on the Johor Causeway.

Hasni, on the other hand, described the development as good news for the Johoreans as the RTS would finally materialise.

“It will be a catalyst for change in Johor creating supply chains that involve various sectors,” he said.

A long-awaited project, the four-kilometre RTS project will link Bukit Chagar, Johor Bahru to Singapore’s Woodlands, allowing around 10,000 passengers, particularly Malaysians cross over to the city-state for work.

Construction works on the project, which was supposed to start last year, had been delayed several times.
